Federal only. Excludes FICA, state, and credits.
Single filers in 2024 see brackets from 10% to 37%. Your effective rate is always lower than the top rate because only the slice of income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate.
Social Security (6.2%) applies to the first $168,600 of wages; Medicare (1.45%) is uncapped. The employer pays the same on their side. High earners owe an additional 0.9% Medicare tax above $200,000 — not modelled.
State + city income tax, employer health insurance pre-tax, 401(k) contributions, AMT, capital gains, and credits. For exact net, factor in your state.
Annual gross income is reduced by any pre-tax deductions (401k, HSA), then federal income tax is computed across the seven brackets (10–37%) and FICA is deducted (Social Security 6.2% up to $168,600 + Medicare 1.45% uncapped). State income tax, where applicable, comes off on top. The remainder is take-home.
FICA is the combined Federal Insurance Contributions Act tax that funds Social Security and Medicare. The employee share is 7.65% — 6.2% Social Security (on wages up to $168,600 in 2024) plus 1.45% Medicare (uncapped). Both are included in this calculator's take-home estimate.
