Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Value Added Tax (VAT) are both consumption taxes charged at each stage of supply. The end consumer pays the full rate; businesses claim credit for tax they paid on inputs. The name differs by country, the mechanics are nearly identical.
Retail prices in the UK, Australia, India, and Nepal are usually tax-inclusive — the sticker price is what you pay. US prices are typically tax-exclusive — tax is added at checkout. Switch this calculator's direction accordingly.
Reduced rates (UK 5%, India 5/12/28%, Nepal exempt categories), state-level levies (US sales tax varies by state and city), reverse-charge rules, and import VAT aren't modelled. The presets use the standard nationwide rate.
India's standard GST slabs are 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%; most consumer goods sit at 18%, which is the calculator's default. Nepal's VAT is a flat 13% on most goods and services. The UK uses a 20% standard VAT, Australia 10% GST, and New Zealand 15% GST. The calculator's region preset auto-fills the right one.
Choose 'Add tax to base' in the calculator, type the pre-tax amount, and select the region preset. The output shows the base, the tax amount at the rate, and the gross total. This is what you'd add to a quote or invoice before sending it to a customer.
Choose 'Extract tax from total' and type the gross amount printed on your receipt. The calculator reverses the math — base = total / (1 + rate), tax = total − base. Useful when a vendor gives you only the inclusive total and you need the base for accounting or expense claims.
Because there is no single US rate. State rates range from 0% (Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware) to over 7%, and most counties and cities layer additional taxes on top. The 7.5% 'US average' preset is a national average for reference only — check your state's department of revenue for your real rate.
